And Then They Were Three

Ahhh.... I got to do a newborn shoot this week. And a FIRSTBORN newborn shoot, no less. There is something about a two people going from a couple to a family of three that never fails to inspire me. Such drama, such extremes, such profound, fierce, brand new love and navigating new territories... and all of this on less sleep than you've ever functioned on in your life. If ever a time warranted photographic documentation, it's now.

Meet Ellison, the sweet, sweet daughter of Josh and Anne.

It never hurts to get a few simple, more traditional shots during a newborn session.

But my favorites tend to be the ones that more accurately illustrate what these first few weeks feel like. The astonishing adoration:

...the natural cradling and comforting of a fledgling momma:

...the exquisite innocence:

...and of course, of course, those tiny brand new parts:

Welcome to your new world, Ellison Grace. You are one loved little girl. (And Josh & Anne, I can't wait to show you the rest! Thank you for inviting me to share a few hours of this beautiful time in your lives!)

Everybody Needs Love and Ice Cream

When I was approached a couple months ago about taking some photos of this little cutie...

with her cousins...

Well, yeah. That was a no-brainer. And when I was told they wanted to involve the family business? Even better.

THIS is the family business.

It's safe to say the kids were okay with the arrangement.

Summer summer summer! Don't leave us yet, summer!

Okay, I'm done now. Back to the photos.

Elle may have been a little disappointed that there was no ice cream for her.

Not to worry! There's a solution for that.

Good grandparents know just what will make the kiddos happy when they come to visit.

Love and ice cream.

Reeve at One Year

You can put a little boy in the right outfit, plan the photo session for after his nap, and save all the best toys for when he doesn't want to cooperate anymore.

You can not, however, keep a one-year-old from sleeping in the car on his 4-hour drive down from Northern Michigan on a warm August afternoon, three hours prior to his planned-on nap time.

Did Reeve let this get him down?

No, indeed.

I know that a boy in blue isn't exactly unexpected... but COME ON.

Even after his eyes began to glaze over with fatigue, a cuddle with mama and a story was all we needed to get a few more shots.

Impressive, Reeve. (I hope you had a restful nap after I left. :)
